United Way Announces Nearly $70,000
In Mini Grants
CARLSBAD – The United Way of Carlsbad & South Eddy County is awarding $69,455.00 in mini grants to 17 different local applicants, executive director Linda Dodd announced today.
“Mini Grants are just one of the many ways we are able to assist the community,” Dodd said. “Because we had such a successful 2014-2015 campaign, we were able to conduct this After School Mini Grant Program and help support our educators and area youth.”
The Mini Grant program awards a maximum of $5,000 per application and will only pay for a maximum of 50% of a given program’s total cost.
The 2014-15 United Way of Carlsbad & South Eddy County Campaign raised a record-setting $915,000. The After School Mini Grant Program concludes the grant-awarding process from that campaign, which also included more than $568,000 in general and community impact grants, in addition to funding for emerging needs grants, special community impact grants and the United Way’s own outreach programs, such as 2-1-1.
“We’re always proud to say that 98% of our money stays local, and because we had such a great campaign last year, we were able to make an incredible impact with that 98%,” Dodd added.
Mini grant applicants this year included supporting funding for after school tutoring at a number of Carlsbad schools, science olympiad at Loving Municipal Schools, reader’s theater and debate club at Jefferson Montessori Academy, science club at Pate Elementary and much more. Most schools in South Eddy County, along with the Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad, were impacted.
Applications for the mini grants were due Aug. 29, and programs will be funded Oct. 1 throug April 1. The board’s allocations committee, then the executive committee and finally the full board review applications for funding to make sure everything is in order. Recipients of funding are expected to meet all deadlines, be in compliance with their own bylaws and have all financial statements in order.
The United Way of Carlsbad & South Eddy County is currently running its 2015-16 campaign, and programs such as the After School Mini Grant program are only possible through the generous support of the community. For more information on scheduling a campaign visit, call (575) 887-3504.
